But in addition to the above duties the Inspector of Markets has to inspect all cattle landed in Hongkong, and to attend to any outbreak of disease among cattle in the Colony.
Generally speaking 440 head of cattle, 23 head of sheep, arrive here daily, and over 300 pigs; and it can be easily seen that a thorough inspection of these animals requires a considerable time. Indeed Government has already recognised that one Inspector is not sufficient to overtake this work in addition to his other duties by appointing an Assistant Inspector of Markets whose chief duty it is to inspect the live stock arriving here.

The Slaughtering of cattle has also to be supervised by the Inspector of Markets, which takes up a good deal of time, as the Slaughter house for Victoria is situated in the extreme West of the town, and another at Yaumate. Recently Mr. Rae has inspected slaughtering at the West.

the ports of Inspector of Weights and Measures and of Dangerous Goods have been entrusted for many years to the Inspector of Markets.

It is plain, I think, from the above brief review that no one man can perform so many duties efficiently. As I have pointed out, this has been recognised to a certain extent by the appointment of Inspector Rae, who inspects all cattle landed in the Colony and supervises the slaughtering.
